  • Why Do We Exercise
In this article we're going to focus on REASONS TO EXERCISE. Even though most of us know that regular exercise is "good for us", we may not be able to give the specific reasons WHY exercise is good for us.
  • We Can Do It
Let's face it, from time to time we ALL become discouraged by our fitness progress. The weight isn't coming off as fast as we expected.....we haven't been in to the gym for almost an entire week.....we 'caved' and had two donuts at the office this morning. We've all been there!
  • Trans Fat: Friend Or Foe
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued new Dietary Guidelines for Americans. While we're thankful that the government is working to keep us safe, we're a little disappointed that the new dietary rules don't go far enough in advising people to stay away from one particularly dangerous type of fat: trans fat.
  • Timing Is Everything - Part 3
In this series of articles we're examining the TIMING of fitness. We've already looked at WHEN to eat for minimum fat storage, and also WHEN to exercise for maximum fat loss.
  • Timing Is Everything - Part 2
We've all heard the popular addage 'Timing is everything'. As passe as cliches may be, we can't argue with the accuracy of this phrase. It holds true in almost every aspect of our lives - business, relationships, family and even exercise.
  • Timing Is Everything - Part 1
When you're on the road to life-long fitness, the two most critical variables to control are EXERCISE and NUTRITION. Some fitness experts argue that true fitness is 50% REGULAR exercise and 50% nutrition. Others in the field believe that it's more of an 80/20 split.....80% nutrition and 20% exercise. Either way, there's virtually nobody out there contradicting the basic truth that regular exercise and sound nutrition will pay HUGE dividends! What we don't hear so much about, however, is the timing behind exercise and nutrition.
  • There Are No Forbidden Holiday Foods
Most of those 'extra' holiday calories don't come from super-high-fat foods, either, and that's our topic for today. Most of those extra holiday calories come from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th helpings! See, it's not so much that the holidays are full of hyper-caloric foods, but it's that we tend to ignore portion sizes during the holidays.
  • Skinny Fat People
You've seen it on the TV commericals: before and after pictures of people who 'lost weight' by simply taking a pill. The local radio station plays ads promising that you can 'lose weight' without dieting, or as they call it, 'sweaty exercise'. Your favorite magazine even tells you that dieting alone can help you reach your 'ideal weight'.
  • Nutrition - What To Drink
As we wrap up our focus on 'what to eat', we're going to examine what we should be drinking. If it's true that "we are what we eat, from our heads to our feet" then we can also accurately claim that we are what we DRINK!
  • Nutrition - Veggies: The Miracle Food
The sad truth is that we (Americans) are just not eating enough vegetables! The proliferation of pre-packaged foods and heat-and-eat meals has just made it more convenient for us to add pounds, while robbing us of the health benefits of natural vegetables. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average adult American eats 4.4 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, which is an increase from 3.9 servings a day when the 5 A Day program began in 1991. Children eat 3.4 servings a day, which is an increase from 3.1 servings a day in 1991.
  • Nutrition - Meat. It's What's For Dinner
Some meats are simply too high in saturated fat for regular consumption. Examples include most beef steaks, fatty pork chops, and of course the traditional breakfast meats (sausage and bacon). There are, however, quite a few meats that deliver all the good nutrition we seek without loading us down with artery-clogging fat.
  • Nutrition - Good Fat Vs. Bad Fat
Most of us WANT to eat healthier, but sometimes it seems that forces are working against us! Fast food is just so tempting. Sally at the office brought donuts to share again. Our schedule is so busy we don't have time to cook healthy food. Finally, it's true that junk food is often less expensive than healthy food. How fair is that?!?!
  • Nutrition - Desserts
Eating a healthy dessert doesn't have to break the bank. While it's true that Twinkies and Ding-Dongs do cost less (in dollars) than quality healthy foods, the cost to our health is truly frightening!
  • New Year Resolution - Part 5
I resolve to make this the year that I actually do it! No more excuses. No more reasons why I can't, because I CAN. I have the power. I have the desire. I have the ability. I have the motivation. Nobody else can do it for me, but that's okay because I don't need anyone else to do it for me! I CAN DO IT. I AM ENOUGH. I AM MORE THAN ENOUGH! I CAN. I resolve.........
  • New Year Resolution - Part 4
Now that we've all created a resolution that is specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and time-bound the question is HOW DO WE STAY MOTIVATED TO ACHIEVE THAT RESOLUTION?
  • New Year Resolution - Part 3
We firmly believe that a successful resolution MUST INCLUDE EXERCISE. Is it possible to lose weight through dieting alone? Yes. Is it possible to maintain a lower weight through dieting alone? Again, the answer is yes. But is weight loss through dieting a healthy weight loss? Probably not. Let's look at why.....
  • New Year Resolution - Part 2
It should come as no surprise that this series of articles is focused on New Year resolutions. After all, many of us look at the start of a New Year as a chance for us to create a new body.
  • New Year Resolution - Part 1
December finds many of us busy, busy, busy! The Christmas shopping season has already started, and many of us are also planning holiday parties or events. If there's ever a time when we find ourselves too busy to exercise, this may be it!
  • My Pyramid To Health And Fitness
Remember the old Food Pyramid that we were all taught in school? You know, the one that told us to eat more 'grains and carbohydrates' than anything else? Last January the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a new symbol and interactive food guidance system called "MyPyramid". This picture, which replaces the Food Guide Pyramid introduced in 1992, is part of an overall system that emphasizes the need for a more individualized approach to improving diet and lifestyle.
  • Lose Weight And Save $$$
It's true! Losing weight will help you earn and save more money. "Studies have consistently shown that obese employees are paid less than normal-weight employees doing similar jobs" (Source: HealthNewsDigest.com - Palo Alto, CA)
  • Maintaining That Summer Shape
Many people have a tendency to drop between ten and twenty pounds each summer simply because IT’S SUMMER. The constant reminder of how we look, combined with heightened activity levels, make people conscious of health and fitness on a whole new level. We are frequently reminded of how we look because we’re wearing fewer clothes (anyone wear shorts this month?). We’re also more active during the summer because of fantastic summer activities like biking, swimming and hiking.
  • Watch Your Weight This Halloween
For those of us who are looking for quick weight loss, Halloween can be a scary experience! While just one night of indulgence in Halloween candy might not be enough to break your belt, dipping into the leftover stockpile for weeks on end will surely derail your diet or weight loss program.
  • Live Longer By Exercising - Part 2
Even though many of us exercise so we can look better, we shouldn't forget the many health benefits of training. So without further ado, here are some MORE reasons to exercise:
  • Live Longer By Exercising - Part 1
Now, I know what you're all thinking: WE EXERCISE TO LOSE FAT SO WE CAN LOOK GOOD! To be honest, that's the reason why most of us exercise, and THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!
  • Inspiration Or Desperation
Each of us has a choice. We can choose to live in regret, never taking action because we feel too sorry for ourselves. On the other hand, we also have the choice to FORGET about our health and fitness past (or lack of it) and focus on the future.
  • How Long Will You Live
Perhaps you've seen the latest health news.....scientists are concerned that our overweight and obese population will not live as long as previous generations. USA Today recently reported that "Obesity could shorten the average lifespan of an entire generation - today's children - by two to five years, according to a controversial new life-expectancy analysis" (Source: Nanci Hellmich, USA TODAY).
  • It's So Easy
Health and fitness experts tell the truth about REAL fitness: exercise and proper nutrition is the only path to true lifelong fitness! Forget all the "get slim quick" schemes out there promising you quick results with zero effort! Our position is the same one you heard from your doctor: Eat sensibly and exercise regularly.
  • Here Comes The (Skinny) Bride
Approximately 7 out of every 10 brides crash diet or starve prior to their wedding date (source: www.fresnoweddings.net). Fitness experts know that CRASH DIETS AND STARVATION DIETS ARE THE WORST THING WE CAN DO! "If you crash-diet, you run the risk of comprising your health ... so that your hair, skin, nails don't look good for your big day or in the wedding pictures. If you want to lose weight before your wedding, look for a balanced eating plan" (source: Suzanne Henson, coordinator of the University of Alabama-Birmingham's EatRight Weight Management Program).
  • Have The Courage To Lose Weight
Let's take a look at some of the weight-loss pitfalls we may need courage to overcome. Although all of these won't apply to everyone, we need to be aware of these traps.
  • Consistency Is The Key
But did you know that CONSISTENCY is the key to success in health and fitness? It takes only about two weeks to start losing your level of cardiovascular fitness when you stop exercising. After about three to four weeks without exercise, you'll start losing muscle (fitness experts will tell you that losing muscle is the WORST thing we can do when trying to lose fat!). Source: Shape magazine; June 2005.
  • Beware The Summer BBQ
Now that it's summer, it's almost impossible to avoid the ever-popular summer BBQ. Some of our favorite meals are cooked over charcoal, but we still need to be aware that many of the traditional 'summer' foods are packed with fat and calories!
  • Baloney And The Fountain Of Youth
Lately I've been receiving a lot of spam emails. It's amazing how many of them are promising quick weight loss without any effort! One of them even promised that their new 'super tonic' was the new Fountain of Youth.....just take their product and watch the years fade away. If you'll excuse the expression, that's all just a bunch of baloney. The radio advertisements promise "weight loss without diet or exercise" and the infomercials brag about the newest and greatest pill that will magically make the fat melt away.....baloney!
  • Atkins & Low-Carb - Part 6
In this series of articles we have focused on low-carb dieting. Is it right for YOU? We have looked at some of the concerns with low-carbing, we've examined the diets of bodybuilders, and we've explained exactly how carbohydrates react in the body. In this final article on the topic of carbs, we will attempt to answer the million dollar question: should YOU start a low-carb diet?
  • Atkins & Low-Carb - Part 5
With the popularity of low-carb diets today, most of us have at one time or another considered cutting carbs. In this series of articles we have discussed 'low-carbing' and whether or not it's right for everyone.
  • Atkins & Low-Carb - Part 4
Since so many people in the United States are currently in the middle of a "carb-frenzy", this series of articles has focused on the pros and cons of the low-carb diet. Topics of discussion have been 1) Can you stick with a low-carb diet for the long term, 2) Conflicting messages about carbs and 3) bodybuilders and low-carb dieting.
  • Atkins & Low-Carb - Part 3
But as we've discussed in the last few articles, low-carbing may not be right for everyone. While the evidence does support the claim that a reduction in carbohydrates will help you lose weight, conclusive evidence on the long-term impact of low-carbing remains elusive.
  • Atkins & Low-Carb - Part 2
Without a doubt, the most popular low-carb plan is the Atkins diet. Atkins is the fuel in the rocket, so to speak, that has put the low-carb phenomenon into orbit. Prior to Atkins, few (if any) of us had considered low-carbing as a weight loss plan. Of course, carb control as a concept existed long before Atkins; we called it the glycemic index!
  • Atkins & Low-Carb - Part 1
Unless you've been living in a cave for the last few years, you've probably noticed that low-carb mania is sweeping the nation. Food manufacturers are in a heated race to see who can get the most low-carb fare into the grocery stores, and every advertiser worth their salt is emphasizing the low-carb message. Popularized by the late Dr. Atkins, the low-carb diet has taken the nation by storm and promises to be a trend with staying power.
  • Add 8+ Years To Your Life
As most Americans know, losing that excess bodyfat for good will bring us a LONG list of benefits. Lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, decreased risk of some cancers, and so on. Besides just helping us look and feel better, achieving true fitness also prevents bone loss, improves memory, eases the symptoms of menopause, and more! In short, regular exercise and bodyfat reduction will all years to our lives by minimizing so many life-threatening conditions.
  • Fast And Easy Weight Loss Using Diet Programs And Diet Pills
Crash diets, weight loss pills and get-thin-quick gimmicks are more prevalent than ever, yet two-thirds of our population is still overweight. Even more startling is the fact that approximately one-third of the people in our country are clinically obese.
  • Is A Fitness Franchise The Best Business Opportunity For You
Due to the rapid growth of women-only circuit-training gyms, women in particular are finding that weight loss is an achievable goal. Workouts just for women have become a common sight from sea to shining sea, with the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association reporting that as of July 2005 there were 26,046 health clubs in the United States (a 10.8 percent increase from just six months previous). Women-only circuit training clubs account for more than one out of every three fitness centers in the nation.
  • Action = Results!
Don't wait until you feel like exercising, because you'll probably NEVER feel like it. JUST DO IT. The action of working out will create the inspiration you need to exercise tomorrow......and the day after.
  • 5 Ways To Stay Motivated
While gym attendance peaks around January, it slacks off every March/April as people forget about their New Year Resolutions. Summer BBQ's and vacations tend to make people stay away from the gym, and six months later holiday parties and planning to the same thing. Finally, we can all relate to those days when we simply don't want to work out!
  • The Gift That Keeps On Giving
The kids are finally back in school.....the temperature is falling.....raking leaves has replaced mowing the lawn.....believe it or not, Christmas is just around the corner! So what's under the tree for you?
  • Ya Gotta Wanna Lose Weight
But it's hard to find the time and motivation to exercise! Sometimes it's even more difficult to say 'no' to that delicious dessert or mouth-watering entree. The excess weight that seemed to appear overnight takes time and effort to lose, and sometimes it can be frustrating!
  • Quit Playing The Blame Game
While we'll admit that genetics plays a HUGE HUGE HUGE role in our weight, it's also true that each of us makes DAILY CHOICES that impact the number on the scale.
  • Medicare Is Missing The Obesity Target
MEDICARE NOW RECOGNIZES OBESITY AS AN ILLNESS, a change in policy that may allow millions of overweight Americans to make medical claims for treatments such as stomach surgery and diet programs.
  • Lose 1.5 Pounds This Month With Zero Effort
Did you know that it's possible to lose 1.5 pounds this month and almost 20 pounds this year with absolutely zero effort? It's true! We're going to reveal a weight loss 'trick' that will help you LOSE FAT and will make a nice addition to your exercise program!
  • How Cookie Monster Can Help You Lose Fat
Everyone loves Cookie Monster, that blue fellow that can never seem to get enough cookies. Cookie Monster never worried about calories, fat content or serving size.....he just wanted cookies! Who can forget the song "C is for cookie - that's good enough for me!"?
  • Fitness Scams
It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. From miracle pills to the latest fad diet, the gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous.....even deadly.
