  • The Importance of Cancer Screening
The American Cancer Society recommends that even people with no symptoms go see a physician for cancer screening. Early detection is one of the best weapons we have against cancer. Usually when a patient already has symptoms, the cancer has spread (metastasized). This makes curing it more difficult with the treatments offered today.
  • Report on Carcinogens
To help regulate chemicals, the National Toxicology Program issues the annual Report on Carcinogens (abbreviated ROC). This report was ordered by Congress in 1978. By 1978, it was becoming obvious to scientists that both man-made and natural chemicals found in food, drugs and the environment were to blame for many cancers.
  • Carcinogenesis
Carcinogenesis is the act of forming a cancer. Carcinogens cause mutations in our DNA which can lead to cancer. Therefore, chemicals that cause cancer are called carcinogens. Studies estimate that 2/3 of all cancers are caused by environmental carcinogens that could be eliminated. These carcinogens include tobacco, various chemicals, viruses, dietary factors, radiation sources and sunlight.
  • Four Major Phases of Tumor Formation
To summarize, there are four major phases of tumor formation. Each phase can take years to complete. The first one alone usually takes anywhere from 15 to 30 years.
  • Can a Tumor Get More Nutrients?
All tissues need to be continually bathed in nutrients. They get these nutrients from the continuous flow of blood through blood vessels. This is why blood vessels run throughout our entire bodies. An aggressive tumor can take advantage of this fact.
  • The Basics of Mutations
A cell can be compared to a city. Cities are bustling with activity. People, airplanes, cars, trains, etc... are coming and going to and from it. Structures are being built and others are being torn down. In a sense, proteins can be compared to the people within the city. The proteins cause all the commotion, they make things happen.
  • Nutrients: The Limiting Factor
There is a large body of evidence proving that all the cells within a tumor mass are derived from a single cell. Imagine; one damaged cell can lead to a life-threatening tumor. The magnitude of the true meaning behind this is difficult to grasp because it is an extremely shocking and frightening revelation.
  • Normal Cells vs. Tumor Cells
What makes a tumor cell so different from a normal cell? Explore the basic differences.
