Nowadays, the fashion industry is getting more and more bold. A designer after a designer breaks one convention and tabu after another. Recently, even one of the most traditional outfits is experimented with, namely a wedding dress. Traditionally speaking, it ought to be long, white, and rather modest in its design. However, many designers tried different lengths, colors, and sometimes they even make them too revealing in order to get on popularity. After all, being provocative is one of the best ways to make a name for oneself in today's world of show-business. Unfortunately, these designs begin to creep out of this world into the one of ordinary, simple people. More and more often, young brides choose wedding gowns that either partially or totally go against the tradition. Why is it bad?
Basically, it is an unfortunate phenomenon as a wedding is one of the oldest tradition we have, with its rules so fixed and codified over the years that changing them seems to be a beginning of a slippery slope. But what is more important in case of the dress itself, one has to remember that the way it looks has been perfected over decades at least. Generations after generations modified it so as to fulfill a certain role perfectly. The role of this dress has always been to symbolize chastity and innocence. That is why it should be white and modest. What is more, usually your guests will expect you to follow the tradition and use these symbols. If you do not do this some of them may feel lost or even offended. Remember, that tradition is something that is usually expected to be followed.
These wedding gowns that do not follow this tradition are, therefore, not for ordinary people. They are very often seen on weddings of big celebrities, though. The reason why they should not get popularized is that there is a huge difference in the reasons behind having a wedding in the first place. For common people, the reason is obviously to celebrate the moment when two people exchange their vows end enter the holy matrimony. On the other hand, for celebrities it is an opportunity to increase their popularity by providing tabloids with lots of colorful, and provocative, pictures and gossips. That is why they want their outfit to draw attention. It is all in the name of Oscar Wilde's quote: "There is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about". After all, celebrities live from being talked about. That is why copying their wedding gowns on ordinary weddings is not going to elicit positive feelings.
Therefore, it is of the utmost importance not to intermingle the world of show-business and the world of common people. There are two completely different set of rules and values governing these two domains and they are meant to remain separate. That is why a wedding dress, an object that could be considered as one of the symbols of tradition, should not be experimented with.
