What to Consider In Buying Government Seized Cars

Article Summary: If you have dreamed of owning a luxury vehicle but you always thought it would be too extravagant a purchase, you should think again. You can actually get a classy car at a price you can well afford, by winning a bid at a government seized car auction.

Government auctions of seized cars provide an excellent opportunity to purchase a used vehicle at a very affordable price. You can get some very good deals at these auctions. If you are interested in buying a car at one of them, you can check your newspaper for announcements of upcoming auctions or ask for information form a local government or police department. Make sure you get a description of the bidding and sale process and whether you will have to fork out registrations fees or buyer’s premiums. These factors could affect the determination of your bid.

There is usually a preview period before the government auction when you are given a chance to see the seized cars being put up for bidding. You should certainly make use of this time to get a good look at the vehicles. You will probably not be able to test drive a car, but you can at least get an idea of its quality. Try to get a look at the engine and other car parts, and check to see what accessories are still available. Expect to find some defects, but it is more important to note whether these are major or minor flaws. A car that requires only minor repairs may turn out to be a great bargain.

If you have found a seized car that is to your liking, do a little more research on it. You can find websites that can provide the history of a specific vehicle, which will let you know if it was involved in any accidents and if it underwent regular maintenance. To get this information you will need to know the vehicle identification number, so be sure to note that. Also take note of the car’s mileage, a good general indicator of how much wear and tear the vehicle has been through.

You have to take into consideration that any car you get at a seized goods auction will come without a warranty. You will also not be able to return the car if you are not satisfied with it. The government auctions off the cars “as-is” and offer no guarantees of quality, and the vehicles run the gamut from excellent to lousy. This is definitely a situation where the phrase “let the buyer beware” must be kept in mind, but with good knowledge and preparation, you can come away from the sale with a great bargain.
