Periodontitis is one of the periodontal diseases which affect the gum with its effects not selective. Its effects are almost across board; It comes in stages before being fully fledged periodontitis normally referred to as gingivitis.

Gingivitis is characterized by the inflammation of the gum which is caused by a bacteria signified by plaque and tartar getting attached to the teeth. Gingivitis is identified by red swollen gums which can easily bleed when pricked. But the hope is; it's treatable.

At times there is reluctance on the side of the patient in seeking medication. When medication does not come in promptly gingivitis develops into something much serious called periodontitis. This is the inflammation around the tooth. The gums tend to stretch and abandon the tooth leaving some space between the tooth and gums. Normally referred to as pockets which are infected.

When it remain for long without cleaning they produce some acidic compounds or in chemical terms endotoxins which gradually dissolves away the tooth. Periodontal diseases as a matter of fact can be diagnosed easily by the infected person through the following;

- When the gums appear swollen and red
- Breath smells bad
- Bleeding of gums and the tenderness of gum tissues
- Teeth becomes very sensitive to foreign bodies
- Chewing becomes a problem. That's too pain
- The teeth become loose as result to weakening of the gum tissues.

Prevention of Periodontitis

Periodontitis can be prevented simply and easily by practicing dental hygiene.
At home set up practice the following tools;
-avoid as much as you can using tobacco associated products when you can
- Practice good eating habits i.e. balanced diet
-remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day
-you have to floss almost daily and most preferably before you go to sleep
-you have to visit a dentist regularly for examinations.

In conclusion, periodontitis disease is curable. simply practice well and maintain high standards of dental cleanliness.
