Buying pool tables for your home is not for everyone. But if it is your style, choosing one to suit you is not as easy might seem.

What kind of pool player you are can be determined by what you purchase.

And there are several factors to take into account when looking.

Finances

How much to spend is definitely a big factor. A cheap table made of plywood or something similar is less expensive, but the table probably won't last too many years. If you have kids or aren't too serious about playing, this is okay.

However, if you are a serious player, tables made only of wood have to be your choice. They are more expensive, but they're made better, they last longer, and they more than likely will look better.

Size for the Space

Where are you going to put the table? This will help you determine the size of table you want. In places with less room, an undersized table is suitable.

This smaller type of table will not give you much durability. There is less reinforcement, so it will warp more quickly from when people sit on it or do other similar actions to it.

However, if you have more space available, then you should go with an oversized table.

These tables are built better and have more stability. They can withstand the sitting and leaning; they won't warp or become distorted as easily.

Table Material

Slate is the choice for the serious player. It's durable and is usually handmade. You can choose to have it installed in one piece or in three or more pieces. One piece is not as balanced, which makes for less even play.

Non-slate material is for those who aren't as serious or have children to consider. It's usually made on an assembly line and isn't as durable. It is cheaper, though.

Table Function

How will the table primarily be used? Are you a serious player who sees this as an investment?

Or is it for your family? Your kids and their friends whose only concern is a few years of fun?

If you know what the table's function primarily will be, it'll be easier to decide whether you want to pay more or less.

Cloth

This depends on the whether the table is a framed slate or an unframed slate. On a framed slate, the cloth is stretched across the top and then stapled onto the backing.

On an unframed slate, however, the cloth has to be adhered directly to the top of the slate. This can result in an uneven playing surface. Because the glue is applied directly under the cloth, the ensuing imperfections of the dried glue will reveal this unevenness.

Legs/Support

You can select what suits your taste or the style of your house. Straight or curved legs can be selected according to your taste. Or you might want ornately carved legs. Regardless, you'll want to choose legs that are strong and very supportive.

Color

You can choose the color of the table itself and the color of the cloth you'll be playing on.

The wood can be dark-, medium-, or light-colored, depending on the design.
