I am going to outline a little known strategy that can quadruple your eBay income. This strategy is so cool. But, only a handful of eBay sellers use it, even though it takes so little work. So, what is this little known money making gem?

Backend Sales!

Allow me to give you an example of a tactic I came up with. I noted there were some eBay sellers who were marketing huge lots of greeting cards. Amazingly, when I first checked it out, there was a batch of 1,000 greeting cards being sold, with only 2 days remaining in the auction. Guess what the high bid was?

$1.00!

Can you believe it? The winning bid went a little higher, but not very much. When the auction closed, the high bidder ended up with 1,000 greeting cards for under a penny each.

There are several eBay sellers who habitually market lots of 25 greeting cards at five dollars or more. What kind of a profit could you lock in if you purchased one thousand greeting cards for one dollar and then turned around and sold them for five dollars per set of 25 greeting cards? Two hundred dollars, which is a 20,000% return on your money! Pretty darn good.

By the way, there are bargains comparable to that all the time on eBay. You can discover a lot of them by performing some basic eBay market research.

However, this article is not about uncovering low priced products on eBay and reselling them at a good return. That will be the subject of a future article. So now, back to backend sales (no pun intended).

These huge lots of greeting cards come up for auction on eBay frequently. So, I resolved to use them as a backend sale product. Here's how I did it.

I purchased a large batch of greeting cards at about two cents each. I then developed an order form to sell the greeting cards for $0.20 a piece (you can always jack up the price later). Every time I sent an item I sold on eBay, I just included a sample card & envelope along with an order form.

When my buyer (high bidder) got their item, they were surprised and happy to find that I had included a complimentary card that they could use (nice little bonus). And, they saw that they could purchase more excellent greeting cards, at only $0.20 a piece, in batches of 25. Since most greeting cards normally sell for $2.00 to $3.00 each, that represented a discount of greater than 90%. That's a pretty attractive offer.

The great thing about this method is that anybody who ever buys something from me can become a lifetime customer. They may buy greeting cards from me for a long time. My initial "one-time" sale to them could become a lifetime profit stream, as they reorder greeting cards over and over again.

You can do the exact same thing. The only thing you need to do is source a consumable product that people buy, use up and buy again. Buy the item on eBay for at a bargain price, or through a reliable discount product source. Make up an order form that you can include with your eBay sales. Then, kick back and watch the cash roll in. Very cool!

Remember, your backend items do not have to be greeting cards. That is just an example of something I happened to notice. You might discover other great consumable items that are a more relevant fit for the kind of products you normally sell on eBay. What you want is to find items that people will buy again and again.

To summarize, backend sales is nothing more than the process of selling more merchandise to buyers who recently purchased an item from you. The most opportune time to approach a prospective lifetime customer is when they are already pleased with a purchase and they are in the "buying mood."

Remember, the perfect backend item should be consumable. At the time you secure a new customer, you will want to offer him something that he will need to reorder from you whenever he uses up his supply. This will create life-time buyers that can be the source of a perpetual revenue stream for you.
