Article Summary: You may be surprised to learn that fatigue usually isn't the cause of dark circles. Instead, the most common cause is nasal congestion. When your nose is congested, veins that usually drain from your eyes into your nose become widened (dilated) and darker.

You may be surprised to learn that fatigue usually isn't the cause of dark circles. Instead, the most common cause is nasal congestion. When your nose is congested, veins that usually drain from your eyes into your nose become widened (dilated) and darker.

Another cause of undereye circles is eyelid swelling during sleep. When you lie down, gravity can cause fluid to collect in your lower eyelids. This swelling may create the appearance of shadows below your eyes. In addition, dark circles can result from chronic skin conditions, such as atopic eczema. Dark circles can also run in families.

Dark circles causes by several factors

Genetics - Darkness under the eyes runs in families and is more prominent on fair skin.
Lack of sleep - Poor quality sleep causes blood vessels to become more visible through the skin.
Sun exposure - can trigger "age spots" around the eyes and weaken the skin, which can contribute to dark circles.

Increased fluid retention - The blood vessels under the eyes can become engorged and dilated (dietary salt and smoking are common causes).
Medication: Any medication that dilates your blood vessels can cause dark circles under the eyes. As the skin under the eye is delicate an increase in blood shows through the skin in the form of dark circles.

Nutrition: An improper diet, an unbalanced diet or lack of a nutritious diet can cause dark circles under the eye.

Age: As you grow older there are greater chances that you will have dark circles and they may become more prominent and permanent. If there are too many folds in the skin under the eyes, it will make the dark circles more prominent.

Allergies, asthma, and eczema - Any condition that causes the eyes to itch can contribute to darker circles due to rubbing or scratching the skin around them. Hay fever sufferers particularly will notice under-eye "smudges" during the height of the allergy season. Some food allergies can also cause the area under the eyes to appear darker.

Fatigue - A lack of sleep or excessive tiredness can cause paleness of the skin, which again allows the blood underneath the skin to become more visible and appear more blue or darker.

Some skin care experts say that fatigue has nothing to do with the dark circles, but it has to do with when one lies down since gravity can cause fluid to collect in the lower eye lid.

Pregnancy and/or menstruation
Frequently, your skin becomes pale during pregnancy and menstruation. So the dark circles look darker and are more easily seen.
How do dark eye circle creams help get rid of the circles?
Dark eye circle creams do a couple of different things. First, and most importantly, they speed up the rate of the hemoglobin degradation. As the loose blood is completely degraded, the dark pigmentation fades.

Secondly, dark eye circle creams help to strengthen the capillaries in your skin. This helps to prevent future leakage, and helps to prevent future dark circles under the eyes!
