Article Summary: Crafting a mission statement is one of those things that at first you may actually dread doing. But once you get started you might find it to be a great exercise in finding out what you want you business to stand for. So give it some thought and take it seriously. And to help you craft it here are a few tips you can use.

A mission statement has both the ability to mean everything to your business and to mean nothing. It really just depends on how seriously you take it. Your mission statement can be used to say whatever you want it to but it's the meaning behind the words that will count the most. Your words need to portray your feelings and passion for what you are doing. If you want to be the best in the world at what you do then say so. But say it in such a way as to be able to inspire the people that read it. Here are a few things you might want to consider doing when it comes time to sit down and craft your mission statement.

To start you need to allow yourself the time to do it right. Because everything you intend your business to stand for is going to go into this one document. Which means you'll end up go over every little piece of it until your eyes grow sore. You should plan on having to spend an entire day on it if necessary. Pick a date on the calendar, buy some munchies and find someplace free of distractions. Keeping outside interference to a minimum is a must. Remember this document is going to define your business for years to come.

Next consider if you want to get anyone else involved. If you have other people that are going to be playing key roles within your business then you should probably invite them to the party. Your mission statement is going to mean just as much to them as it is to you. So the least they can do is help you craft it.

Make sure to bring samples. You're mission statement is not the first one that was ever written. See what other people have done for their businesses. Then start a brainstorming session. Remember for this kind of project you really need to get the juices flowing. Your mission statement is not going to suddenly pop into your head. Look over your samples and then start spitting out some ideas. If you can get some samples from businesses similar to yours. This will help give you ideas about what yours might look like. Just remember if you are looking at a competitor's mission statement you had better be able to top them.

Once you are finally done and all your tweaks are made then you can sit back and relax. Put it away for a day. Then take it back out and look it over with a fresh perspective. It's only after you've had a chance to take a break that you can decide whether it is what you were seeking. If it is then there is only one thing left for you to do. Conduct your business in the manner in which your mission statement says you will.
