The field of martial arts includes a wide variety of self defense techniques. One of these is called Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, or BJJ, a sport that is based on the grappling of an opponent to defeat them. After much training, one can win a fight regardless of the difference in size between themselves and the opponent. Progress is measured by ranking the person as they learn the techniques and gain strength; the classification given to a person is indicated by a colored BJJ belt. The proper belt can be acquired by an instructor, but also purchased at a retail establishment or online store.

All people who practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are ranked according to their skill in addition to technical knowledge of the sport. The colors of the belt are indicative of the person's rank, which are different for adults and children. Both start out with a white belt; children advance to a yellow belt, then orange, and finally green. The second level for an adult is blue, then purple, brown, black, black/red, and red. Any of these belts can be easily purchased. Sometimes a better quality one can be found that is also more comfortable to wear. Many retailers that sell fight wear also include these belts in their inventory.

Getting to the next level, and being able to wear a higher level color of BJJ belt, requires years of practice. This form of marital arts was developed in the 1880s and took on the characteristics of an independent sport, in which those who practiced it found a means to build their own character and become more physically fit. Belt color is not only something to personally strive for. Many people consider it a competitive advantage to reach higher levels, and engage in various competitions to increase their skill and knowledge.

Brazilian Jui-Jitsu is derived from Judo, a Japanese form of martial arts, and evolved in a different way once it was demonstrated and taught to people in Brazil, to include competitions in which the best fighter could win. Today it is rapidly gaining popularity and martial arts stores are stocking up on many different supplies and clothing, other than the BJJ belt, to sell to adults and children alike. In addition to comfortable clothing that also demonstrates one's commitment to the sport, the belt color also secures confidence and a drive to succeed even more than the level where one is at.

One is also at an advantage if they have a higher ranking color in a mixed martial arts competition, especially if they consistently beat other high ranking fighters. Competitions, however, are only one area where advanced skill is considered to be important. Many police officers and security guards also practice martial arts, so they also look to increase their BJJ belt color ranking. This can be achieved by training in various ground fighting techniques in case there is a need to engage a hostile person and have a physical advantage. A criminal can more easily subdued while minimizing the risk of personal injury.

Many people seek to get to the next BJJ belt level, but also need to attend to other considerations. Proper clothing is required for the sport and to prevent injury, while protective gear such as helmets are crucial in preventing potentially disabling injuries. It is also important to follow the proper strength and conditioning protocols so that beginning the next level does not strain the body too much. If all of the appropriate elements are followed, then one can reach the highest belt level, lower the risk of injury, and enjoy their accomplishments after many years of hard work.
