Take a Picture, it Will Last Longer
Article Summary: Has anyone ever told you to "Take a picture, it will last longer"? This post will teach you the true meaning of this phrase and how to turn this childish comment into a very powerful business lesson.
When I was in elementary school, I was arguably the shyest little kid around. To say that I didn’t like attention would be the understatement of the year. I was perfectly content flying under the radar with every school activity; doing just good enough to get by yet not too good so that I would draw attention to myself. But there was always a part of me that wanted to be like the sociable kids. I suppose most non-cool youngsters want to be cool to some degree. I often found myself lost in my own thoughts as I secretly imagined my future transition from my introverted ways to that outgoing person I deeply wanted to be.
In my daydreaming I habitually stared at those that I wanted to become like; those that I wanted to mimic. On more than one occasion, I was jerked out my imaginary world by some smart-mouth kid who would say “Take a picture, it will last longer!”
“Take a picture, it will last longer.” I never thought that this phrase would be so helpful to me in the future but it definitely has proven to be some of the greatest advice that I have ever been given.
I did just that. I took a picture in my mind of what I wanted to become and I set out to make it happen. I focused on that picture and wouldn’t stop until I saw it in reality. As I grew up, this exercise helped me to achieve great success in academics, athletics and relationships. I had become a very confident youth because of this one phrase. “Take a picture, it will last longer.”
After graduating high school and then college, I needed to figure out a way to use this lesson on a greater scale. I believed in the principle of taking a mental picture, but I wanted to scale it to accomplish greater things.
The answer came about 6 months after I started my first business and I purchased a business plan. As I read the final product, it was very clear to me that this business plan was an entrepreneurial way (a “grown up” way) of taking a picture so it would last longer. I reviewed that plan every week. I made changes to it almost as often. At that point, I became an advocate for the business plan writers. I evangelized their services to my customers and continue to do it today.
If you are thinking about starting a photography business or if you already have a business, I’d highly recommend “Taking a picture”. You can write your own business plan, you can purchase some inexpensive software or you can pay a business plan writer to articulate your thoughts for you. It doesn’t matter how you take the picture, just that you actually do it.
John Lennon said it best, “Imagine”.
I promise you won’t be disappointed.
