To start your own company is, for some people, a huge step. Relying only on yourself and your own ideas can be frightening, but it can also be very rewarding – not only financially but also emotionally. Succeeding with your own company is perhaps one of the greatest feelings you can find in your work life, but not all new companies last even a year – it is important to really think things thru before you quit your job to start your own business.

No matter if you feel exited or terrified about running your own business, thinking it all thru a few times is essential if you want to succeed. Far to many businesses have gone under only because things have not been thought thru before they start. The things you should consider are many, even though some are more important than others.

There are many different ways to start a company; your own idea, a cooperative or even a franchise. Learning the differences of these forms of business as well as figuring out what suits you is a very good first step towards your own company. Once you understand the different concepts, you can move on to find a specific method you can use when starting your company.

Some people don’t have a specific business idea, but know in their heart they want to be self employed. If you fit in that category, perhaps reading up on franchising could give you a few ideas. Franchising has grown large over the last decades, with franchise opportunities in virtually any business niche you can imagine. Not finding a franchise opportunity in any niche you are interested in, well that would be highly surprising. Although this may sound like the perfect idea for everyone, not all franchises are equally good. Sometimes the cost outweighs the potential profit in such a way it’s very hard to actually make a living on it. Be careful and critical when looking at the various franchise opportunities you dig out.

For people with a specific idea, franchising may work, but often you are better off starting a completely new company, based on your ideas. While this way of starting a business is a lot harder than a franchise, the upper limit is pretty much eliminated. If you have a great idea – and you are willing to work hard – odds are you will make quite a bit of money. Another good reason to start a stand-alone company is the start up cost; franchises often charge you an initial fee, while your own business – with the right idea – can be much cheaper to start.

Another nice aspect of starting a stand-alone company is the freedom that comes with it. A franchise often takes up much time from day one, where a stand-alone business can start as a complementary income, not forcing you to quit your day job. Another nice thing about it is you get to keep most – if not all – of your profit.

Although there are numerous of other things to consider before you start your own company, this is a good first step – Be sure to make your research count. You do not have to spend forever researching you business, but if you are investing your savings you want to make sure you invest them in a business idea that stands a chance to succeed.
