When you are ready to change the way your home looks inside, you need a plan. The first step in your plan is to decide which rooms you're going to alter. If you're going to go room by room and do the entire house, you may need some time to plan. Painting and hanging wallpaper are probably items on your list that you need to complete. When you are a beginner at the entire home renovation thing but have made the decision to do the work yourself, you can feel a bit overwhelmed.

Wallpapers are constantly being improved and redesigned, and new better choices are being offered. Most wallpapers come in rolls that are between eighteen to twenty-seven inches wide and will cover around thirty feet of wall space. Before you choose the type of wallpaper you want to use in an area, you need to consider where you will be papering: will it be dry or humid? Will it be a room used only occasionally or will it be a high traffic room that will require a lot of cleaning? You also need to ask yourself what effect you are looking to obtain with the wallpaper. Do you want a clean neat look, a simple pattern, a splash of color, or do you want to portray dramatic style or elegance? By asking yourself these questions, you will be able to discern which wallpaper types will be best for you to consider using.

Hanging wallpaper isn't a breeze but it doesn't have to be incredibly difficult, either. If you follow some simple steps and take precautions, you should do just fine. The first room that you hang wallpaper in should be the smallest room that you're going to renovate.

You'll want to make sure that you've removed everything from the room or at least one side of the room before you get started. You don't need anything to stand in the way of you and your mission with that wall.

When you're going to be doing the work yourself, you're bound to be even more critical than you'd be if someone else was doing it. We are, after all, our own worst enemy and critic at times. Don't go into the process of hanging wallpaper dreading it. Easy as that may be for me to say, you've got to try to be optimistic and open minded.

Don't ever just jump into the job and start throwing paper up. About the last thing you want to do is have to take the wallpaper down and start over. Chances are you'll have to throw the first sheet of paper out and that's going to start a downward spiral of events. Grid out your room before you begin. Lay out a careful plan-measuring and double checking your numbers.

Find the middle point of the wall that you're going to start with. Make sure that you mark the wall so you know exactly where to start with the first sheet. Work your way around the room from wall to wall; ensuring that all seams meet up and any patterns on the paper match perfectly. If you see any adhesive on the front of the wallpaper, quickly wipe it off with a wet sponge. The last thing you want is to ruin the beautiful job you're doing with big globs of glue.

When you've hung a section of paper, make sure to evenly and carefully trim the excess off from where the piece meets the wall and the baseboards. Take your time and you'll have a beautiful, professional looking room before you know it.

Always make sure to clean up your work as you do it. If not, you could end up mismatching patterns and you'll have to completely redo the wall. It's always best to work slowly when you're first learning to hang wallpaper. As time goes by, you'll speed up and your accuracy will improve.
