Of course, adults love getting presents as much as their children do. That childish thrill of untying ribbon and tearing the wrapping paper off of a gift, wondering what's inside, is something that never subsides.

One thing most adults have learned, that their kids may be just on the brink of discovering, is that Christmas is as much about giving as it is about receiving. Spending the time to shop for, or make a gift for, a loved one or friend, is a very nourishing act. Children instinctively want to comfort, and the consideration of giving at Christmas is something most kids adopt as soon as they're encouraged to do so.

Thinking about those we're close to at Christmas reminds us, too, of the conflicts we've experienced in the past year, with friends and relatives. It happens every year that harsh words or some kind of insult can lead to the break-up of friendships, or the estrangement of loved ones. Often, later, no matter what happened, we regret the result.

Children can go through the same things. At school or church or scouts or soccer, they may have been through similar tough times with those they considered their friends. And being young and inexperienced, the pain of such anxiety can be harder for children to deal with.

For both adults and children, the holiday season can be the perfect time to examine the friendships and relationships that have had struggles, in the past year. It's the perfect time for adults to realize, and for children to learn, that the success or failure of any relationship depends on both parties, and that no relationship can begin or end without the participation of both parties.

Forgiveness is a gift that can renew spirits and relationships and Christmas become the perfect time of year to forgive, and the perfect time for adults to teach children about the healing power of forgiveness. Whether we forgive someone else for hurting us, or forgive ourselves for causing someone else's pain.
