Article Summary: Unlike most types of tools, nail guns are not meant for general purposes - there is not an all-purpose nail gun that you can use with all your work. Nail guns are designed to perform specific jobs, so before buying a new nail gun it's very important to know the work for which it will be used.

Unlike many types of tools, nail guns are not intended for general purpose use - there is no all-purpose nail gun that you can use for all your jobs. Nail guns are designed to carry out specific jobs, so before purchasing a nail gun it's important to know the jobs it will be used for.

The varieties of nail guns are:

- Roofing and Siding nail guns: These nail guns are intended for the specialized task of putting up either siding or roofing. They store large numbers of nails that are designed specifically for the job at hand (roofing or siding). These are almost always coil-type nail guns.

- Framing nail guns: These nail guns are meant to drive large (1-1/2" to 4") box-type nails into larger pieces of material. These nail guns tend to be fairly heavy and big and are usually stick-type nail guns, they there are some coil-types available too.

- Finish nail guns: These may be referred to as brad or pin nail guns. They are designed for fastening small finish-type nails into light pieces of stock. These nail guns tend to be smaller and lighter than framing nail guns, and they tend to be used for trim or finishing work. These are usually stick-type nail guns.

Once you select the sort of nail gun you want, some other properties that are very nice to have and which you should look for are:

- An adjustable exhaust output. When nails are delivered, air comes out the back of the nail gun. It's often helpful to have this adjustment so that the exhaust air is not being delivered into your face.

- An easy-to-use depth setting. Just about all nail guns have an adjustment to manage the force with which the nail is put in. This way, the nail is not left jutting out of the surface, or sunk in too deep far in. Many nail guns need tools, and time, to perform this adjustment, others have an adjustment that can be done by hand and these tend to be quicker to adjust. If you suspect you'll need to be making this adjustment fairly often, the easier and quicker it is to set, the easier it will be to use this nail gun.

- A large trigger. If you are planning on working with your nail gun in snowy weather, you will want to be wearing gloves. In this case you'll want to have a easy to pull trigger so that you can operate it when wearing gloves.

- If you are going to be nailing a lot of nails, you will want to consider the nail capacity of the nail gun as well as the the effort required to load nails into the gun. Buying the correct nail gun in this regard can save you a lot of time, or cost you a bunch of time if you make a bad decision.

- A swivel on the air connector . If you will be moving around a lot with your nail gun, this will help reduce the snarling of your air line.

Finally, be sure you check the reviews for the nail gun you are thinking about purchasing. Looking at a tool in a store or on-line, it is hard to be sure how well it will work in the field. By looking at the reviews of people that have used the nail gun, you'll get a much better idea if this nail gun will work for you.
