Article Summary: The Washington Post (December 11, 2008), listed the recall of two prominent prescription drugs, used by Type 2 diabetics to lower blood sugar levels, as among the Top 2008 health stories. In response to these recalled products, more and more diabetics are looking for alternative, natural remedies to take their health into their own hands, and out of the hands of greedy pharmaceutical companies.

The Washington Post ran a story about the 'Top 2008 Health Stories'. Unfortunately for Type 2 diabetics, the news wasn't pretty.
According to the Post, two of the most popular prescription drugs, intended to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics, turned out to be more dangerous than the illnesses they were supposed to cure.
Avandia and Actos, two of the most popular blood sugar reducers, were either black labeled or recalled from the market.
The reason - they had a nasty side effect that tended to cause heart problems, even heart attacks among diabetes sufferers.
Additionally, these drugs were also found to cause bone fractures among women who used them, an added but unstated side effect.
Even Metformin, sought out as an alternative to Avandia and Actos, wasn't without side effects. Though not as serious as the two black labeled competitors, Metformin was found to have side effects that included rapid weight gain. This is a serious issue with diabetics, undermining the benefit of this well-received product.
So what does a poor diabetes sufferer do?
Based on an increase in calls that we receive whenever the Food and Drug Administration issues black label or recall status on a prescribed diabetic drug, they take their health into their own hands and seek out a Natural Cure, as Kevin Trudeau urges, in his book series, Natural Cures.
Does a cure actually exist, outside of a synthetic drug laboratory, that can really lower blood sugar, without causing a heart attack or weight gain?
The answer is a definite YES!.
Products exist on the market today that have been tested and proven to be effective and safe, without known side effects that can kill you.
The most commonly noted one is chromium. This trace mineral helps to regulate blood sugar levels in your body. But today's diets, rich in high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) sweeteners, rob the body of this precious mineral, spiking blood sugar levels.
To replace chromium, most alternative medicine practitioners recommend a chromium supplement.
But, like prescription drugs, you need to be sure your getting the right product, in the right dosage from the right manufacturers.
Over-the-counter supplements don't require a prescription from you doctor. But their safety and efficacy vary considerably.
If you've decided to take a chromium supplement to better control your blood sugar, be sure to take the most effective chromium form (niacin-bound or polynicotinate). This form works best because it is readily absorbed into the system, giving the diabetic maximum bio-availability.
The user should also be aware, that this form has been found to be clinically-tested for long and short term safety (not all chromium forms are safe to take, either short or long term).
An added benefit of seeking out niacin-bound or polynicotinate chromium is that it's also proven to lower weight levels and cholesterol - two problems common among diabetics.
Diabetics should always consult with their physicians before ingesting any product, prescribed or over-the-counter.
Oh yes, one more benefit. Niacin-bound chromium or polynicotinate has been tested for side effects and found to have no discernable problems in that regard.
