Article Summary: The divorce rates have been increasing at an alarming rate these days. Many couples are opting out of a marriage in search for better lives for themselves.

Divorce has become so prevalent in the society that we live in, that common misconceptions are easily formed about some of the issues regarding divorce.

Myths of Divorce

Marriages can be complicated. However, divorce and the issues surrounding divorce can be even more complicated. These complications can give rise to a lot of myths regarding divorce. We will discuss some of these common myths that people tend to believe with respect to divorce.

  • Men Cheat on their Wives more than Wives Cheat on their husbands

  • This is one of the most common myths regarding divorce. Traditionally, men were the breadwinners whereas women played the role of a homemaker. Being away from home used to give men the freedom as well as the avenue to meet and be with another partner. However, because women mostly used to stay at home with other womenfolk, they never got a chance to interact with people of the opposite sex.

However, this scenario has changed significantly now. Women have their own careers and their own life. Wives have just as much opportunity and avenue to meet other men as their husbands. Therefore, when the situation gets rough and a shoulder to cry on is needed, there is no dearth of men around who probably are more than willing to help a woman in distress. Seeking emotional comfort from another person is the most common cause of an extramarital affair.

Harmless flirting in the office can turn into serious relationships. It becomes very easy for the wives to build excuses to stay away from home because office related work is often a common excuse. Therefore, the changed circumstances allow the women to carry out an affair just as easily as men.

In fact, recent studies have proved that approximately 80% of the men claim that they have never cheated on their wives. Consequently, it would be unfair to say that more men cheat on their wives. Both the sexes are driven by natural human instincts. There are times when a wife can disregard the institution of marriage and indulge in an affair for personal gratification.

If a person considers his or her marriage important enough, he or she will never engage in an extramarital affair. However, if a person has low moral standards or places high importance on giving in to his or her fantasies, he or she is highly likely to engage in an extramarital affair.

  • Women Usually do not Want a Divorce and Regret it Later if they do

  • Divorce and circumstances related to divorce are hardly something that can be generalised. To say that women never want to opt for a divorce and regret this decision later on is nothing but an exaggerated myth. Women are far more independent these days and far more aware of their legal rights.

While a woman in earlier times would have dreaded sustaining herself without her husband, the woman of today is financially independent and is well-aware of the fact that financial settlements are ruled in favour of women. If there is some need in a marriage that is not being fulfilled then a wife is as likely as a husband to seek divorce.

There are times when a husband in his middle age is more likely to compromise on his needs to have his wife’s companionship in the long run. While there are some middle-aged women who tend to feel that they have compromised their entire life for their husband and would rather like to divorce their husbands to lead their life their own way.

Some women live their lives being financially dependent on their husbands. For such woman, divorce can actually be a blessing in disguise because a financial settlement after divorce helps them live their life their own way. Such women prefer to divorce their husbands and are far more satisfied with their lives after divorce because divorce helps them feel liberated.

Women are generally happier after a divorce than men because they know how to take care of themselves. Men, on the other hand, are so used to depending on their wives for every little thing that they find it very hard to manage things around the house on their own.

  • Women are More Attached to Children than Men and Can Take Better Care of the Children

  • A child needs a father as well as a mother. Both are equally capable of loving the child. However, a mother is more capable of physically expressing this love than a father. This does not mean that the father does not love the child or is incapable of taking care of the child.

In fact, children tend to learn how to be strong and independent from their fathers. They are better equipped to deal with the various situations of life by themselves because they tend to learn effective problem-solving skills from their fathers. Some mothers can be overprotective of their children and can actually hamper the child’s growing and learning process.
