Article Summary: Have you been pounding the pavement, sending emails, applying to jobs to no avail? In the midst of all this, bet you are wondering why you are not generating the interest you'd hoped for. Problem: You may not be working as smart as you should-maybe you haven't figured out that looking for work is a full time job. Here are some tips to help you use your time wisely.

Recently I was asked to conduct a weekend workshop for women looking for jobs. (I have since complained so that the workshop next year will be for PEOPLE trying to get jobs. Why discriminate? Men need work too-but I digress...)

Anyhoo--- I noticed a commonanlity in the participants that I'm sure even they didn't realize existed. They all shared an attitude of defeat. And small wonder-they'd been pounding the pavement, sending emails, applying to jobs to no avail. In the midst of all this, they couldn't figure out what might be stopping them. Problem: they were not working smart. What do I mean?

They were online but applying for jobs willy nilly. They didn't realize that there could be several hundred people looking and applying for the same position.

They didn't change their resume to fit the jobs they were seeking. In other words (and I always have other words...) they didn't change the resume to mirror the words used in the ad. When hiring managers look for rsumes online, they usually use words in the ad. If the resume doesn't have those words-it may not even get seen.

They had many grammatical and spelling errors. Remember this: Spellcheck can be an aquaintance of yours but is not always a friend! It can't differentiate between the words :their, there or they're. So IF any of these words are spelled correctly but is STILL the wrong word, spell check will keep it a secret! Now would a real friend do that?

They didn't network - sure a few family members and friends knew they were looking for work but nobody else did. Cardinal rule when looking for work? Tell EVERYONE you come in contact with-you never know who knows someone, who heard of someone or who is the mother of someone who knows about a job somewhere.

Where I am going with this: Although I don't know who would want to, there really is "more than one way to skin a cat." In the case of job hunting there are hidden job markets, there are people in the know, there are numerous websites that can help in this endeavor. And as I reminded the participants, there's always ME!!

Here's to your success!
