Depression is an illness caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that make a person constantly feel aloof, negative, sad, and unmotivated. It can last for weeks, months, or even years. It can result from stress, certain situations, or nothing at all. It can affect people of any age, including teenagers and even young children.

Young people often suffer from depression, which leaves parents with lots of questions such as: why does it happen, and what treatments are available? Fortunately, depression is treatable and some of the best depression therapies are in the form of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.

In the past, it was believed that children and teens could not have depression, but in reality, depression can affect people of any age. Often, depression in children and teens is triggered by events such as a relationship breakup, abuse, illness, a loss in the family, or having to change schools. Sometimes, depression occurs by itself. Depression can be hereditary, meaning mothers and fathers suffering from depression are more likely to have children who suffer from depression.

There are many different forms of depression. Most adolescents with depression have a form of major depression. This depression obstructs a person's ability to enjoy life and engage in normal activities. Some adolescents may also suffer from a milder form of depression called Dysthymic Disorder, which is a long-term form of depression with less severe symptoms than major depression. A rarer but still common form of depression is manic-depressive disorder (bipolar disorder), which is characterized by sudden mood shifts from extreme sadness to extreme happiness.

Depression can be a serious problem for young people because their symptoms may vary slightly from the symptoms adults usually display, making it more difficult to recognize and treat. Often, minors with depression will not seem sad or "depressed" as one would expect in adults. Constant irritability is often one of the biggest signs of depression in young people. Depression symptoms may not be obvious, but may include difficulty sleeping, persistent sadness, low energy, and decreased interest in activities they used to love.

A child with depression may have trouble with schoolwork, have trouble making friends, or get in trouble by "acting up," a cry for attention. The effects are also pronounced for teens, who may use alcohol and drugs to escape their mental depression. Depression is not the sufferer's fault, but people with depression do have the power to get treatment and find out how to cope with their depression.

Depression treatments can range from therapy and counseling, to the use of antidepressant drugs. Group psychotherapy can be beneficial for teens and children by providing a safe place to share their feelings with their peers. Online services such as forums for teen depression can also provide a source of information for teen depression and serve as a type of group therapy for the depressed.

Behavioral counseling can help teach people how to manage their depression. Therapy can help parents understand what causes a child's depression. Family counseling helps educate parents on depressive disorders and what they can do to help.

In some cases, antidepressant medications are prescribed. This is only done under the careful supervision of a physician who will monitor the child's health and mental state. Although people with depression may need to take antidepressants, these drugs can have many side effects, especially in children and teens, who are still developing. For this reason, psychological therapy, understanding and support from parents and professional therapists, and the use of treatments that help children learn how to cope with their depression by themselves are considered better for helping children and teens with depression.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practices can be used to treat anxiety, stress, and depression. They help people form safe and positive coping mechanisms for living with depression. It works for all people because it is non-invasive, does not require the use of any medications, and is a valuable form of self-therapy.

One NLP technique used to fight depression is the NLP Flash. This technique trains your mind to use the feelings that create anxiety and depression as triggers for positive thoughts that relieve depression. It is a technique that even young people can learn to use to help them cope with their depression.

People with depression need not suffer. Therapy can help depressed people of all ages find relief. NLP techniques are ideal for helping adolescents and their families handle anxiety and depression. These treatments can diminish or even eliminate depression in any person.
