The most prestigious people attributed to the innovation of many contemporary pieces and sets were alive during the 20th century. Below is a list of some of the most popular influences of modern furniture design history:

Charles Le Corbusier This man is thought to be one of the pioneers of modern architecture. More specifically, in regards to living room sofa furniture this man could be thought of as one of the most brilliant designers that ever lived.

Since about 1928, he has started a new design trend which included the creation of pieces that meets both the needs of necessity and comfort expected of most individuals and families, even today. An assortment of sofas and similar-styled arm chairs first designed by him are still found in stores today, and for very good reason.

Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe The Great Depression was not about to stop this famous designer from creating some of the finest pieces in history. This time in history was probably the highlight of his career. In 1929, Mies Van Der Rohe had designed the Barcelona Chair. It was first modeled for the King and Queen of Spain, and this item is oftentimes supplied today with a similarly-designed stool.

This great work sits in a museum, and versions of his original designs that are still produced are still set in homes today. He also facilitated the production of the Barcelona Coffee table which was presented about a year later.

Florence Knoll This world-renowned designer was schooled under Mies Van De Rohe and Eliel Saarinen. After she created her own line of sofas she seemed to become an overnight success. In the 1950s some of her choicest work was displayed at the Museum of Modern Art.

Besides sofas, she also was responsible for the creation of various contemporary arm chairs and glass coffee tables. Many of these designs are still distributed and sold today and put in homes worldwide.

George Nelson This man is probably most remembered for his famous clocks, such as the Eye Clock, Star Clock, or Multicoloured Ball Clock. He produced infinite variations of these as well as other designer timepieces while he worked for Herman Miller in the 1940s onward.

Aside from clocks, George Nelson also has received iconic status because of his role in producing the very fun Marshmallow Sofa, which first came out in 1956. The people who influenced him the most during his time included Charles and Ray Eames, Eliot Noyes, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Charles Eames Not many people do not know about the world famous furniture duo- Charles Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. This has long been a comfortable living room sofa furniture favorite. This man worked under some of the most important authorities of his time and Eames seemed to be a very quick and eager learner.

He was accredited as a person who had what it takes to be a designer, and of course he demonstrated that talent in his work. He also probably achieved great outcomes because of the fact that he had a love for his work, which probably was what made him into what he is today.

Not many architects could pass him up. One of his major influences was Eilel Saarinen, who was the same person who taught Florence Knoll. Eames, Knoll, Saarinen and others all are responsible for the production of some of the finest models of living room sofa furniture still placed in homes today.
