The Best Ways to Enjoy Outdoor Lifestyle in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area

No one enjoys being cooped up in the house all day watching reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show" and eating cold cereal. Well, fortunately, if you live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, this will never be an problem for you. However, if you're new to the area and want to cure your case of cabin fever or you are thinking about relocating here but want to know all the great places for outdoor fun, then keep reading. You will not be disappointed.

Find Great Hiking and Parks

The city of Dallas provides 27 separate hiking and biking trails, so there's a lot to choose from. Fort Worth also has a large selection of trails. What makes Fort Worth trails particularly unique is that they are all connected, so you could hike from one end of the city to the other. These trails come in all types: remote, urban, challenging, and easy, so there are hiking trails in Dallas/Fort Worth for all levels of hikers.

The Trinity Trails system in Fort Worth is similar to a subway map: you can see how each paved trail system winds its way through the city. It's an enormously fun activity to bike somewhere far off in the city, rather than drive. Simply put, Fort Worth was made for walking (or bicycling and rollerblading).

Fort Worth is also known for its large-scale parks. Trinity Park is a relaxing place to stop if you happen to be hiking the trail system. Other parks include Gateway Park, Rockwood Park, and Marion Sansom Park at the base of Lake Worth. Dallas also has plenty of full-featured parks, including the Dallas Arboretum, Rochester Park, Boulder Park, Fair Park, Old City Park, and the Dallas Zoo - not technically a park, but with plenty of areas for walking.

Lakes and Water Parks

When it comes to the height of aquatic fun, Burger's Lake in Fort Worth simply can't be beat. With two sandy beaches and an abundance of mature shade trees, water lovers of all ages can enjoy fun in the sun here. Plus, the full staff of certified lifeguards, more than 300 picnic tables and a multitude of charcoal grills all ensure local beach combers have a safe place to enjoy.

If you need more amusement with your water, then consider the always exceptional Great Wolf Lodge. Located in Grapevine, Texas, this 80,000 square foot indoor water park is one of the most stylish of its kind in the Dallas Area. With six restaurants, overnight suites, an indoor wave pool, water slides, a six-story funnel and a host of other cool features, the Great Wolf Lodge ensures water lovers of all ages get doused in some good old aquatic fun.

If you're looking to "rough it" in the great outdoors, the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands, which lie to the north of Dallas/Fort Worth is the perfect destination for camping, hunting, and spotting an array of area wildlife. There are a number of organized walking tours or clubs to which offer a whole host of activities in Dallas, both indoors and out. The Texas Mountaineers are the leaders of climbing activities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Find what you like and join in the fun.
