The basement is among the most versatile areas of your abode, lending itself easily to furnishing, remodeling, and almost every application you can think of. If you need a place for your book collection or a spare room for your guests, your basement will always be among your best bets. Here are some other ideas for maximizing the use of your basement.

Library

The basement makes a good reading room since it is a quiet, private area. Located away from the rest of the house, you will get the chance to enjoy your preferred books in peace while still being close enough in case you’re wanted upstairs. Put your bookcases in the center of the room so the books do not get too much sun exposure. Light is almost always limited in the basement, so be sure to plan your light fixtures carefully. Match strong task lighting with subdued ambient lights in several reading areas.

Entertainment room

The entertainment room or home theater is among the most preferred home basement uses. It’s easy to bring about the dimmed lighting used in professional theaters, and making the room soundproof takes no time since the room is very secluded to begin with. Make sure to organize the wiring—you do not want a chaos of wires hanging down from the ceiling as you are viewing your favorite flick. Have the wires run under the floor or over the walls, and disguise them using paint or carpeting.

Wine cellar

If you’re an avid wine enthusiast, you might want something larger than a shelf to store all your bottles. And with a basement, you can have a whole room all to yourself! Basements have the dry, cool environment needed for preserving wines at their best. The temperature must not fluctuate too much, so regulate it by placing covers on large windows and installing even, fixed lighting. Keep the temperature within the range of 48o to 56o F; if you live in a place with hot climate, consider getting an air conditioner.

Home gym

Space and privacy are the prime reasons individuals put off building a home gym. What is the point of acquiring all that equipment if you don't have any place to put it? If your basement is big enough, you can change it into a personal gym and fitness space. Whether you have just one treadmill or an entire fitness arsenal, you can easily put it into your basement’s floor space. Make sure there is enough air, though—utilize all your windows or try to install new ones to allow more air to get through.

Family room

The living room can be a cool place to hang out, but a lot people treat it as merely a display room for their guests. A different family room allows you and your kids to do what you want without having to think much about causing disarray on the carpet, hitting the shelves, or ruining the décor. If you have little children, get a carpeted floor or rug to function as a play area. Use low-cost, sturdy materials such as metal and plastic, and avoid brittle ones like glass and wood.

Personal space

Sometimes you may need to get away from it all and spend some time alone. This is where a personal space comes in handy. Your personal room is where you can delight in all the things you like, do the things you feel like, and just be yourself. A basement provides you just the right amount of privacy for such an area, without shutting you off completely from the rest of the house.
