A complex disorder may be characterized by profound fatigue of six months or longer duration that is not improved by bed rest. A person with chronic fatigue syndrome feels completely worn-out and overtired. It may be made worse by moving, exercising, or even thinking.

Chronic fatigue syndrome causes such devastating tiredness or fatigue that you can't perform all of the normal, daily activities you used to. There are other symptoms as well, but fatigue lasting 6 months or more is the main one. Some people battle CFS for years. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome affects almost 1,000,000 Americans a year. Researchers do not know what causes CFS, but they believe this illness involves interactions between a dysfunction of the immune system and trigger agents such as viruses.

A good night's sleep would be a dream come true People with CFS are often unable to experience any sort of restorative sleep. The nervous system is so stressed that although the desire for sleep can be overwhelming, the body wakes after a couple of hours. Sleep is severely disrupted with no recognisable patterns. It is not uncommon to wake feeling exhausted, emotionally drained and desperate. A warm bath, lavender oil on the pillow, a herbal remedy such as valerian, or prescribed medication could help a good night's sleep.

Causes

Currently, the exact cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown. However, health experts believe chronic fatigue syndrome is could be related to: Iron-poor blood (anemia), Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or environmental allergy.

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome remains unknown at this point in time. A number of research teams throughout the world have investigated possible links to a number of virus infections (including Epstein-Barr virus, enteroviruses and poliomyelitis as well as and fungal agents (in particular, Candida albicans). Despite extensive studies, the evidence that CFS is caused by any particular infective agent is equivocal. Nor has it been shown that physical or mental stress cause chronic fatigue syndrome.

Symptoms

Some people think that chronic fatigue syndrome means only that a person is very tired, but the disease involves much more than that. A person may become so tired that he or she cannot go to work, attend school, or take part in social activities. CFS can also cause problems with sleeping. A person may wake up being just as tired as before he or she went to sleep.

Nutritional Deficiency

There is no published scientific evidence that CFS is caused by a single nutritional deficiency. However, a deficiency of any nutrient can result in fatigue.

RBC magnesium levels may be decreased in CFS patients, some of who have adequate dietary intake of magnesium.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause fatigue. This is a common deficiency in people who have gastritis, take acid-blocking medication, are vegetarians, or have an autoimmune pernicious anemia.

Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

As in many chronic illnesses, specific treatments that can remove the underlying cause or causes of CFS are unknown, although it can be very helpful to treat the symptoms. Perhaps the most important therapeutic step is accurate diagnosis because many patients with CFS fear that they may have a malignant condition, multiple sclerosis or another progressive illness. The usually favorable diagnosis may help reduce anxiety and promote acceptance.
