It is ironical in a nation where the number of dating sites continue to surge with every sunrise. The most popular sites are dating sites to a majority of Americans. However this frolicking is not in search of a soul mate. Their primary goal is to get a companionship that is steady and offers a good time. Nothing more nothing less. It is a question of companionship or marriage in a country where the institution of marriage has come under intense debate.

A survey carried out by a market research firm brought to the fore some amazing facts. The issue of companionship or marriage is well illustrated in the findings of this survey. It shows that regardless of gender, race, religion, household income or region only 3 percent of Americans were looking for marriage. 20 percent were considering getting into a committed relationship with no marriage plans even in the near future. 32 percent were comfortable with a relationship that provided a steady companionship and another 32 percent who considered casual flings to be vogue. Online matches are not popular either with only 5.5 percent of the respondents seeing marriage as the most likely outcome. Going by the diverse rates in this country, it is no wonder the popularity of marriage is waning so fast.

At a time when online dating is in vogue and when the revolution brought about by the Internet has made everything so easy, things are still complex. It is baffling to say the least that millions of Americans visit dating sites but they do not believe this dating sites can yield to marriage. A good number of respondents actually believe that many Americans are intent on using online dating sites simply to get a casual fling. But why when the whole wide world has been wired to become a world without borders? When our backyards have been extended to include the entire world? Meeting people has been made so easy but marriage is still elusive in America. When it comes to the big question of companionship or marriage, companionship is preferred.

The findings of the survey indicate that the value offered by the Internet is appreciated and recognized by many Americans. They acknowledge the horizons that they are able to scale in establishing friendships, developing companionship and meeting people of similar interests. But what is an average American looking for in a dating site? Is it companionship or marriage? Companionship carried the day with many Americans viewing dating sites as avenues to meet people of similar minds. Areas where you can easily get a fling if just for the feel of it. Another group sees online dating sites as sources for a potential and committed relationship.
