Article Summary: Type 2 Diabetes is often associated with low chromium levels, often caused by excess intake of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). To combat this deadly ingredient, chromium supplementation is recommended. But diabetics need to closely consider the type of chromium for maximum effectiveness and safety.

In an article published on the popular alternative health website Mercola.com, Dr. Mercola says high fructose corn syrup or sweeteners (HFCS):
"interfere with the heart's use of minerals, such as magnesium, copper and chromium...implicated in elevated blood cholesterol levels...reduces the affinity of insulin for its receptor which is the principle characteristic of type 2 diabetes...".
No fan of this cheap, used in everything but the kitchen sink sweetener, Mercola strongly believes that HFCS is responsible for aggravating obesity in the U.S. as well as blood sugar levels.
This is a common complaint of other natural health food experts and authors as well. Kevin Trudeau, author of the best-selling book series Natural Cures, recommends that everyone, especially diabetics should avoid this ingredient like the plague, because it is.
One of the most commonly recommended solutions for reducing blood sugar and weight levels is chromium supplementation.
The body only needs small amounts of this valuable trace nutrient, but that small amount makes a big difference, especially if excess amounts of HFCS have drained it from the human system.
Researchers have evaluated chromium supplementation as a means of controlling these diabetics' symptoms.
The results have been promising. But caution is urged when choosing the best or most effective and safe form of chromium.
As Dr. Mercola has noted,
"some common vitamin and mineral supplements can be dangerous to your health if taken for too long, according to the Food Standards Agency.
For instance, high levels of the supplement chromium picolinate may cause cancer. The agency said that 10 mg. a day or less of chromium in other forms other than chromium picolinate is safe, but they are considering a ban on chromium picolinate in food supplements."
This possible link between chromium picolinate and cancer has scared a lot of Type 2 diabetics from using all chromium supplements.
That's too bad. Based on extensive medical research, scientists have found that one chromium form in particular, niacin-bound chromium (also known as polynicotinate) has been proven to provide considerable health benefits without toxicity or cancer effects.
Niacin-bound chromium compared to picolinate and chloride forms was found to be up to 600 X more bio-available.
More importantly, it's safety was evaluated by the independent test facility, the Burdock Group, which lead to it's receiving GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe), indicating short and long term safety of use.
This is a difficult designation to receive and the only one of its kind among chromium forms.
According to Dr. George Burdock, president of the Burdock Group:
"Two elements were key in the decision to certify niacin-bound chromium for GRAS status. First was the historical foundation...and a history of safe use. Further support came from studies...that provided safety confirmation according to modern scientific standards. This...provided the necessary substantiation needed to confidently make this GRAS determination."
For those suffering from chromium depletion resulting in excess blood sugar levels, chromium supplementation with the appropriate form of niacin-bound chromium can help lower levels and provide additional clinical tested results including lower cholesterol and reduced weight.
