It is easy enough to stick to a diet for a short time but when you are having to stick to a life-long diabetic diet you will find that there are several barriers which will frustrate you in your efforts. The secret therefore to beginning a diabetes diet is to understand exactly what those barriers are and to concentrate your attention on the benefits of your diabetes diet.

The sort of barriers which you are likely to encounter include:

* Culture. Food is much than just sustenance and for many of us it is also very much a cultural expression. Luckily, there are a variety of different ways in which to prepare food and you will find that there are many excellent diabetes cookbooks focusing on food from different cultures.

* Cost. Buying fresh fruit and vegetables can be expensive, especially when you have to buy 'out of season' imported produce. But do not forget that, as you increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, you are also cutting back on expensive convenience foods and snack items such as potato chips, so the two will tend to even out.

* Social Pressure. Bringing your family on board should be reasonably easy but it might not be quite so easy to bring other people on side. It should be easy enough to inform your wider family and close friends about your dietary needs and help to avoid embarrassment at dinner parties and other social events at which food is served, but there are always going to be occasions when you find yourself in a social situation and cannot resist trying a slice of home-made cake.

In this situation it is a matter of forward planning and working out precisely what you would do in advance of the event. For example, you could decide to have a small piece of cake and merely adjust your diet for the rest of the day to compensate. Alternatively, you could decide that it is better to eat before going out or to take your favorite snack along, plus a bit extra for other guests to try.

* Family. members of the family might find it difficult to accept a different diet and they might not be too happy with your 'alternative' spaghetti Bolognese. Here it is best to simply sit the family down and discuss your diabetes and exactly what it means in terms of your diet. In almost all cases the family will be very supportive once they understand your position.

However you elect to deal with these barriers, they will have to be faced and overcome. This should not be too difficult as long as you give it a bit of thought and some effort, but it will also help if you focus your mind on some of the benefits of following your diabetic diet:

* Feeling better. If you do not stick to your diet there is a good possibility that you will overeat, or eat the wrong food, raising the level of sugar in your blood and making you tired and generally unwell. However, with your diabetes diet you will feel a whole lot healthier.

* Lower your risk from low blood sugar levels. We tend to think of diabetes in terms of high blood sugar levels but a number of diabetes sufferers also experience the difficulties associated with low blood sugar levels, such as, weakness, sweating, dizziness and irritability, and may even fall into a diabetic coma. Your diabetes diet will assist in maintaining a regular eating pattern which will lessen this risk considerably.

* Better weight control. If you stick to your diabetes diet you will not overeat or eat food which may lead to weight gain, allowing you to keep your figure and also lessening the risk of developing other health problems such as heart disease and stroke.

With the right diabetes diet, and a bit of exercise, you will find that you can control your diabetes and enjoy a normal life.
