Computer games are made available to public either by the developer itself or it can be published by the third party. After publishing of computer games, the distribution starts and the distribution can be done through physical media, Internet, or through online delivery services. The physical media distribution of computer games is done through compact disks, floppy disks etc. Though computer games are the designed software for computer but most of the computer games require certain hardware, which makes these games easy to be played on computer. As these games basically include graphics, so a special hardware must be there in the computer which favors the computer games. The hardware could be a graphics processing unit. The function of graphics processing unit is to speed up the procedure of drawing multifaceted scenes in real-time. However, the hardware requirement may be different for different computer games. Other hardware that is required is: sound card, physics processing units, joysticks, keyboard, mouse gamepads etc. Some computer games make use of software called as emulation software. This software is capable of running those games on the computer which is designed only for the consoles or certain operating system. These are also called as console emulator. NESticle and MAME are two such console emulators.

Spacewar is the first ever computer game came in 1961. This was designed for PDP-1 computer that was used for the statistical calculations. In 1960, with the advancement of microprocessor, the computer games became more famous. Earlier computer games were generally text based fictions. In a text based computer game, player uses the keyboard to communicate with the computer and command it. However, later on, computers were capable enough to run the sophisticated games like adventure. Adventure was the first text based adventurous computer game which was developed for the PDP 2 computer in 1972. By the start of 80’s, the special feature of computer games was graphics. However, after few years, the then computer games included both i.e. text based games and graphics. Pool of radiance and bard’s tale are two examples of such computer games that used textual commands and basic graphics together.

Computer games can also be played on internet. In that there is no need to buy the game. Many websites provide free service to play any computer game online. However, user can download the game. This comes under the shareware and online distribution of computer games. For this the computer must be connected to the internet. Computer games have been criticized for a long time. They have been a source of debates. And this was just because of the violence shown in some computer games which has a bad impact in the mind of a child. However, even after the criticism and controversy, computer games have been very popular among the public. Some famous computer games are: crisis, halo, quake, marrowind, sim city, runescape, warcraft etc.
