Cobalt is necessary in very small amounts in all mammals and is used to treat several different types of cancer in humans by being a radioactive tracer and cancer treatment agent.

Industrial uses include radiography, food radiation for pasteurization and sterilization, steel belted radial tires, battery electrodes, pigments, porcelain enamels, paint and ink drying agents, electroplating, petrol catalysts, magnets, high speed steels, corrosion and super alloys such as in turbine aero plane engines.

Medicinal uses revolve generally around the radioactivity area of cobalt. It is used quite widely in radiotherapy and has two gamma rays that are used to eliminate bacteria found on fruit and vegetables and therefore prolonging the life of them known as irradiation. Because of the problems with radiation protection, many plants I western countries have stop coming into production.

In all living organisms, it is an essential mineral that helps us to function properly. It is only necessary in small amounts and so there exists little case for deficiency reported. It is a key component of vitamin B12.
