Although cars have had a great impact on our lives and many things are now much easier due to their existence, I am not going to talk about this meaning of car or truck. I am simply going to point out the difference that the word truck or car has in many different countries.

The word truck is used to define a vehicle that serves the purpose of transporting materials, equipments or bulk goods and its name actually comes from the Greek word trochos which means wheels. However, the meaning that the word truck has in different countries is not the same. Not all languages stick to this definition of the word truck. For example in the United States Of America the word truck was actually used to describe the wheels of a wagon so the name that trucks received were motor trucks or HGV, which means Heavy Goods Vehicle. The British refer to a truck using the name lorry. However not all trucks are lorries only the heavy or the medium ones. For example an SUV could never be a lorry for the British although it can be considered a truck in America. In the northern part of America the word truck has been replaced with the word pickup although they refer to the same thing. In Australia ute is the word for truck as it is in New Zeeland.

The word car is also used as a replacement for the word automobile, which is actually the correct word. This word is a combination of the Greek word auto and the Latin word mobile. The automobile was also named a motor car due to the fact that it carried its own motor and thus people have shortened the word and only started to refer to this vehicle as a car.

The inventor of the first car or automobile can not be named for sure because there are some candidates on this list. Some say that a French invented the first car, however rudimentary it was whereas others believe that a Swiss as the inventor. This concerns us because whoever invented the car must have also named it and this is why the subject is of interest to us. However because we can not know for sure who was the inventor I guess we just have to settle for the name we have and how from automobile it became simply “car”.
