It is fairly common for a man to give his wife a gold band or a diamond ring when they get married. This mold started to break with newer ideas, like the platinum ring. It is now being taken to a whole new level with tungsten black wedding bands. Sure, this may sound a little extreme, but have an open mind and give these rings a look; you may like what you see. When you get married your ring symbolizes your love. Show the world you have a unique love by wearing a unique wedding rings.

The Origin of the Wedding Ring

The wedding ring has many stories that come with it. The ancient people of Egypt used to make rings out of intertwined plants and gave them to each other as a sign of love. The ring being a circle represented eternity, which is how long they hoped their love would last. It was always worn, as we wear it, on the ring finger of the left hand. It is believed that this finger has a vein in it that runs directly to the heart. This legend is also found among the Greeks and the Romans, the latter of whom call this vein "vena amoris," the vein of love. These rings, however, would wear out after about a year. It is natural that we began looking for better materials to make rings out of. We went from plants to leather, bone, wood and then metals. Metals like silver, gold, platinum and now the long-lasting tungsten.

What Is Tungsten?

Tungsten was first discovered in 1781 and its name comes from Swedish meaning "heavy stone." It is a rare metal composed mostly of Scheelite and Wolfromite. It has a much higher melting point then other metals, even higher than iron. It is denser than gold or uranium, yet can be cut with a hack-saw using a hard-steel blade. These qualities make tungsten jewelry not only a practical choice, but an esthetically pleasing one too.

Black Tungsten

Any tungsten ring is non-scratchable and when polished gives a mirror shine. The black tungsten, however, is even more majestical because of its color. The mirror like shine on the black ring is clearer than that of its grey counterparts. These black wedding bands are also very durable and can handle the everyday pounding that a ring goes through on your hand. It will not dent or change shape on you. Generally speaking, scratches on a black ring would stick out more clearly, but that is not a concern with a black tungsten ring. You will notice how the black ring stands out alone, yet when a couple is together their rings catch the eye as a matching set.

Styles

You can custom make your wedding rings. You can have Celtic engravings done on your matching rings, or have thin strips of gold in-laid into the center of your black rings. This style is also possible with other metals and even ceramic. This style plays on the contrasting colors of the black ring and the in-lay. If you want more than just a wedding band, then consider a ring with some gems on it, like a diamond. You can have one diamond at the top of the rings or have diamonds in-laid along the length of the rings, spaced out evenly. The diamonds can be various sizes and cuts. Another option is to have engravings done on the rings. The possibilities are many. Just make sure you get the measurements right the first time, because tungsten rings cannot be re-sized.

Black is often associated with power, sophistication, modernity, elegance, mystery, wealth and style. A couple walking hand in hand wearing black wedding bands will exude such characteristics. Show the world your bold love and how it shines.
