When I first got this book, I took one look at it and decided I wouldn't read it. After all, the guy writes for the Huffington Post, which, isn't much better than a tabloid magazine. Liks as not, there's definitely an issue of credibility here. I figured it would probably be that "la la la save the whales hug the trees" kind of stuff. I'm glad to say I was wrong.
I changed my mind about reading this book though because I found the topic just too intriguing. Unlike a lot of people who believe that the way to change the world is to change outside circumstances, I believe that the way to change the world is to change yourself and become the best person you can possibly be. The first step is in actually believing there's room for improvement, and believe me, there's room for improvement in everyone.
So I read this book, and I'm glad I did. This is far more than the adventures, or a travelogue of someone who writes for questionable journalistic entities. This is a roadmap for achieving more of what you want in life and finding a way to finance those dreams no matter what they are.
If you are someone who wants to visit far off places like Africa, and feed the hungry, this book will appeal to you. If you're someone like me, who is more interested in seeing just how far you can go in life and what you can really do with your talents and aspirations, then this book is for you too.
First, it's filled with some of the stories of how the author has chosen to fulfill his dreams. This includes everything from doing volunteer work overseas and living in a foreign country, to those other dreams like seeing all of the countries of the world.
This is also about challenging the status quo and figuring out what is right for you in your life. Guillebeau also provides examples of people that he's worked with, as well as their outcomes. In the end, he really challenges you to think. The goal here is to find the path that is right for you, not the path your parents think you should take, or even the path the government or society thinks you should take.
Ultimately, this does turn out to be a book about being a non conformist, about getting your life off of autopilot, about thinking about what you want to do, what you want to have, and who you want to be. The sad truth is that most people will never live the lives or their dreams because they will never take the risk. It is unfortunate, but this book might just help you avoid a life of "quiet desperation" if you are willing to apply the principles offered.
In the end, what this book really shows you is that you don't have to be rich, or have huge amounts of resources to do those things you really want to do with your life. You just have to want it bad enough and then be courageous enough to take those steps you need to take to achieve it. This is a great book, and it's a fun book because not only do you get to read a book that's enjoyable, but it's engaging, interesting, and again, just plain fun too. You learn something. Definitely worth your time.
