Though previously thought of as a rite of passage for teenagers, braces have slowly become more common among adults who would like to have straight teeth as well. Adult braces have become popular in the recent decade for a wide variety of reasons.

Why should you opt for adult braces anyway? While most adults choose to have braces attached to get straight teeth and good appearance, there are a number who do it for health reasons. For starters, note that improperly aligned teeth and bite can cause jaw problems, as well as bone and gum loss. Misalignment can also cause tooth decay, bad breath and gum problems (gingivitis). Moreover, bite problems (medically known as malocclusion) tend to become more troublesome as we age. An imperfection today may become a serious health issue in 10 or 15 years. The longer you try to put off the treatment, the worse it can potentially be.

Luckily for adults, you do not have to turn back time in order to correct your teeth and gum problems. With adult braces, you can be on your way to the perfect-looking straight teeth and healthy oral hygiene that you have always wanted. Although adult braces may involve more complicated procedures than the ones usually given to teenagers, the recent advances in orthodontics have given way to new solutions that can lessen pain, discomfort and complications.

There are a variety of adult braces you can choose from to achieve straight teeth. Though conventional metal braces are still the most popular, they can prove to be more painful for adults. Damon braces, one of the most recent developments in metal braces, include a self-ligating feature that allows wires to move freely, thereby keeping discomfort and pain at a minimum.

Many adults feel embarrassed about having to wear adult braces. This is understandable considering how people have, for a long time, labelled braces for kids only. Luckily, with more and more adults opting to get braces, the social stigma is all but gone. Adults now have as much freedom as teens to get braces and improve their chances for achieving straight teeth.

Invisible braces and tooth color brackets have been made available to those who still prefer to be inconspicuous. Tooth colored brackets are those usually made in ceramic material and are generally less visible. Hidden braces called "lingual" adult braces are also an option. They are attached to the inner surface of the teeth and not in front, making them virtually invisible. Lingual braces. however. are more challenging to maintain and apply.

Adult braces are now becoming just as popular as teen braces. For both health and aesthetic reasons, you should feel free to visit your orthodontist and find out what brace solution is right for you.
