The immune system is the system that protects an organism, such as our human body, from invasion by bacteria, viruses, germs, parasites, toxins and all types of pathogen microorganisms.
Our immune system assist us in staying healthy by preventing infection to contaminate our body. Put simply, our immune system keeps us alive. The minute the immune system is overloaded or stop working properly, we get sick and can even die.
The human body is an ideal ground for many germs and they definitely would like to break in and attack the body. It is the immune system work to keep these germs out. But if they do manage to get in, it is also the immune system job to find and demolish the invaders.
The first barrier these invaders encounter is the skin, which offers a good protection for the body. The skin is difficult to go through and produces an assortment of substances that are risky to the invaders. Cavities like the eyes, the nose and the mouth, which seem easy to invade have some defence too. They are protected by liquids that are able to arrest sneaky invaders.
Obviously, immune systems are always busy and searching for pathogens that are trying to damage our body. It's a difficult task because first of all the immune system has to recognize and remember millions of different enemies.
Also, it has to fabricate the proper defence such as secretions and cells to match up with and wipe out each germ. This is done with the help of a complex communication network. Millions of organized cells get together and exchange information back and forth. As soon as the immune cells receive the alarm, they begin creating powerful chemicals. But the fantastic ability to distinguish the body' s own cells and the foreign cells is the key to a healthy immune system.
This is critical since without this ability the immune system can not have a clue of which organisms to assault or not. This is done with the help of "marker molecules". When the immune system defenders come across organisms carrying markers that say "foreign", they directly send an attack. The faster the response the better they can eliminate the invaders.
