Many of the skin care recipes have been lost and some populations around the world do not even know what these products are anymore.

Whilst we can blame large companies for supplying us with skin care products relatively inexpensively, part of the problem has been our own reluctance to do things for ourselves. Large skin care manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon that has come about in all things natural but their herbal preparations have to be mixed with some kind of preservative if they are to last which means they are not as good as home made ones.

Growing numbers of people are going back to the old ways and using herbal products made in small batches by tiny companies that specialize in using the old techniques. Still it will never be a huge market an as no-one really wants to make them in their own home, commercial products are likely to continue; below are a few that you may or may not know of.

Aloe vera is probably the best known which is an extract from Aloe plant and is one of the best examples of herbal skin care product plus freshly extracted aloe vera is a natural hydrant that helps to heal cuts, treat sun burns and in soothing skin. Herbs like dandelion, chamomile, lime flowers and rosemary are often used with other herbs like tea and are used as herbal cleansers.


Antiseptics are another important part of Herbal skin care and the likes of lavender, marigold, thyme and fennel are good examples of herbs that are known to possess antiseptic properties (lavender water and rose water also form good toners). Even tea can be used to help treat skin that has been damaged by to much uv radiation when formulated into a herbal skin care product.

Herbal extracts can also be used in the form of oils like tea tree oil, lavender oil and primrose oil which are the more popular of herbal skin care products. Bananas, apple and melon have hydration properties and are very good for the skin, which is why so many manufacturers use them in bath and shower gels etc.

Most herbal skin care products don’t have any side effects; which is the most important reason for preferring them over synthetic products, moreover, herbal skin care products can be easily made at home, hence making them even more attractive. If you can afford it then genuine herbal skin care products are the way to go but you will find there are occasions when only synthetic products which have been clinically tested will do.

Finally, never disregard the importance of skin care and maintenance products because the skin has an important job to do and needs assistance itself sometimes.
