Article Summary: A few years ago I made a cake for the first time in my life. I was already an expert bread maker, but I had never baked a cake. The idea came to me on Christmas Eve, early that day. My wife and I were cooking for six people that night. I had an interesting recipe for German Chocolate Cake. The recipe looked easy.

A few years ago I made a cake for the first time in my life. I was already an expert bread maker, but I had never baked a cake. The idea came to me on Christmas Eve, early that day. My wife and I were cooking for six people that night. I had an interesting recipe for German Chocolate Cake. The recipe looked easy.

Since I live in good sized city with a Wal-Mart Super Center and Costcos within five minutes of my house, I knew that any ingredient needed could be easily found. But for this recipe, I decided to try the local market.

It is only after a few times of making a recipe do I get more creative with the recipes ingredients. The next time I’ll get even more creative. As my luck would have it, the local store did not have the two main ingredients I needed. I could have found them at one of the chain stores, of course, but I didn’t want to fight the traffic. I just chose two different kinds of chocolate.

Not long after I put the cake in the oven, some friends stopped by to say hello. I left the cake in too long, but that worked to my advantage. We were at very high altitude, surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes in the city of Puebla, Mexico. The oven was rickety thing that had seen better days and the thermostat was probably not working correctly. Due to all of these factors the cake needed to stay in the oven longer that the recipe indicated.

The milk chocolate I used was too runny. The icing would not stay on the cake. Althought, it tasted great it would not stay on the cake. Of course it was one of those nights were I was running way behind schedule. In any second, I was expecting to hear the door bell ring. As a final ditch attempt I put the cake in the freezer and hoped for the best.

When I took the cake out of the freezer, it was perfect. I could not have planned a better tasting cake. My wife and her family will always remember that very special Christmas Eve. I am always asked to make that cake again, but I haven’t done it yet. I know it could never be the same. It is hard to top perfection, so why even try.
