Each year, Halloween is accompanied by parties, trick-or-treating and costumes for people of all ages. On October 31st, it’s important to enjoy the festivities with a certain amount of caution and knowledge that can help to make this Halloween a happy one.

Inspect each piece of Halloween candy. Before anyone in your family eats candy obtained from trick-or-treating, make sure that you personally inspect each piece. Any candy that is open or appears to have been opened should be thrown away immediately. Additionally, items that are homemade or are not factory sealed should also be discarded. It’s also important to check the expiration date on all candies before they are eaten.

Accompany children who are trick-or-treating. Regardless of whether you live in a small town or large city, it’s important to accompany children in their quest for Halloween treats. If there are plans to chaperone a group of children, there should be one adult for every two children in order to ensure that proper supervision is present. Truthfully, one adult cannot possibly keep an eye on a large group of trick-or-treaters.

Carry an emergency kit. Whenever you are out at night, it’s important to carry a cell phone with emergency telephone numbers, a working flashlight with new batteries and a first-aid kit. These items can be placed inside of a purse or fanny-pack.

Stay within familiar areas. If you are planning to be out and about this Halloween, make sure that you remain in well-lit areas that you are also familiar with. Speaking of lights, children should only trick-or-treat at homes that welcome the tradition, which will be visibly noticeable by the presence of an outside light being turned on. Avoid any homes that are dark or give other reason for concern.

Obey local laws. Every area has rules regarding dates and times for trick-or-treating, which are designed to promote safety. For this reason, it’s important to familiarize yourself with your town’s curfew and age restrictions relating to trick-or-treating.

When it comes to Halloween, it’s important to have fun with your family and still maintain a watchful eye on their safety. With a little forethought and the right knowledge, you can make the upcoming October 31st a real ‘treat’ for everyone.
